Every South African online casino requires FICA verification before you can withdraw money. No exceptions — it's the law. The Financial Intelligence Centre Act requires all financial service providers, including gambling operators, to verify your identity. This guide is part of our instant EFT and banking hub.

I registered and FICA'd at every casino we review — SA-licensed and offshore — in March 2026. The process is similar everywhere, but the details (which documents, how long, what gets rejected) vary more than you'd expect. See our editorial methodology for how we test.

What you need before you start

Have these ready on your phone before you begin registration. Taking photos mid-process is where most people get stuck.

Proof of identity (one of these)

  • SA Smart ID card — front and back. This is the fastest option at every operator.
  • Green barcoded ID book — the photo page. Still accepted but some operators take longer to verify.
  • Valid SA passport — bio data page. Foreign nationals can use their passport too.
  • Driver's licence — accepted as secondary ID at some operators, not all. Use your Smart ID if you have one.

Proof of address (one of these, dated within 3 months)

  • Utility bill — electricity, water, or municipal rates
  • Bank statement — from your registered bank. Betway specifically requires a colour bank statement matching your payment account.
  • Government correspondence — SARS letter, municipality notice
  • Lease agreement — must show your name and physical address

Not accepted: Cellphone bills, PO Box addresses, handwritten documents.

For your first withdrawal

Some operators also require:

  • Bank confirmation letter or colour bank statement showing your account number and name (for withdrawals over R5,000)
  • Selfie holding your ID (Betway, 10bet)

How to register: the universal steps

The process is nearly identical across all SA-licensed operators:

  1. Download the app or visit the siteHollywoodbets, Betway, Supabets, and others all follow this flow
  2. Enter your details — full name (must match your ID exactly), SA cellphone number, email, date of birth, physical address
  3. Create a password — use something strong. Your gambling account has real money in it.
  4. Verify your cellphone — OTP sent via SMS. Enter it within 5 minutes.
  5. Upload FICA documents — ID photo + proof of address. Do this immediately — don't wait until your first withdrawal.
  6. Wait for verification — see timelines below.

Pro tip: Complete FICA right after registration, even before your first deposit. If you wait until withdrawal time, you're stuck waiting with money in your account. Do it upfront and your first withdrawal processes without delay.

If resubmitting after rejection: Typically ~24 hours for the second review. Fix the issue before resubmitting — don't just upload the same documents again.

Why FICA gets rejected (and how to fix it)

1. Blurry or cut-off photos

The most common rejection. All four corners of the document must be visible, the text must be readable, and the photo must be in colour.

Fix: Use your phone's rear camera (not selfie camera). Place the document on a flat, dark surface. Ensure even lighting — no shadows across the text. Take the photo from directly above, not at an angle.

2. Proof of address older than 3 months

Operators enforce the 3-month rule strictly. A bank statement from 4 months ago will be rejected even if the address is correct.

Fix: Download a fresh bank statement from your banking app. Most SA banks let you generate statements instantly — Capitec, FNB, Absa, and Standard Bank all offer this in-app.

3. Name mismatch

Your registration name must match your ID exactly. "Johan" on your ID and "John" on your account will cause a rejection.

Fix: Register with the exact name on your Smart ID card. If you've already registered with a different name, contact support to update it before uploading FICA documents.

4. Shared accommodation

If the utility bill isn't in your name — common for students, people renting a room, or living with family — you need extra documentation.

Fix: Provide a co-residence declaration. This is a signed letter from the person whose name is on the bill, confirming you live at the address, plus a copy of their ID. Some operators have a template — ask support. Alternatively, use a bank statement in your own name showing the address.

5. Screenshots instead of photos

Operators want photos of physical documents, not screenshots of digital documents. A screenshot of your banking app showing your statement will often be rejected.

Fix: Download the PDF statement and upload it directly. Or print it and photograph the printout.

Registration tips for mobile users

Since 90%+ of SA casino players register on their phones:

  • Camera quality matters. Clean your phone lens before taking document photos. Sounds basic, but a smudged lens is the most common cause of blurry FICA photos.
  • File size. If your photos are being rejected for file size, reduce resolution in your camera settings. Most operators accept files up to 5MB.
  • Use the app, not the browser. The native app's FICA upload is more reliable than the mobile browser version at every operator we tested.
  • Save your documents. Keep a folder on your phone with clear photos of your ID and a recent bank statement. You'll need them again if you register at another casino.

What happens after FICA

Once verified, you're set for all future deposits and withdrawals at that operator. You won't need to re-verify unless:

  • You change your registered address
  • You haven't transacted in 12+ months (some operators require re-verification)
  • You request a withdrawal above R25,000 (enhanced due diligence may apply)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play before FICA is complete?

Yes — you can deposit and play immediately after registration. But you cannot withdraw until FICA verification is approved. This is why we recommend completing FICA immediately after registration, not when you're trying to cash out.

Do offshore casinos require FICA?

Yes, but the process is different. Offshore operators like Springbok and PlayAmo require identity verification before withdrawal, but their requirements are often less strict than SA-licensed operators. They typically accept passport scans and utility bills via email. Processing is slower — 2-5 business days versus 24-48 hours at SA-licensed casinos.

What if I don't have a utility bill in my name?

Use a bank statement instead — this is the easiest alternative. Every SA bank lets you download a statement from the app. If your bank statement doesn't show your physical address, use a co-residence declaration (see the shared accommodation section above) or a government letter (SARS, municipality).

Is my data safe when I upload FICA documents?

SA-licensed operators are regulated by provincial gambling boards and must comply with POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act). Your documents must be encrypted in transit and stored securely. Offshore operators have weaker data protection obligations. This is another reason we recommend SA-licensed operators first.

How long does the full process take — registration to first withdrawal?

At SA-licensed operators: registration takes 5 minutes, FICA approval takes 24-48 hours, and your first withdrawal processes within the operator's standard timeframe (4-24 hours for most SA-licensed operators). Total: roughly 2-3 days from sign-up to money in your bank. At offshore operators: add 2-5 business days for FICA, plus longer withdrawal processing. Total: roughly 5-10 business days.
