PayShap is South Africa’s new instant payment system — think of it as SA’s version of Venmo or UPI. It lets you send money instantly between bank accounts using just a phone number, for R0-R3 per transaction. Since launching in 2023, it’s grown rapidly and most major SA banks now support it.

The obvious question for punters: can you use PayShap to deposit at online casinos? I was genuinely excited to test PayShap at casinos. Then I checked every single deposit page. Eish — nothing. Not one operator has added it yet.

I checked every major SA operator’s deposit pages in March 2026. Current state as of March 2026 — casino payment integrations change, so check back periodically. For working deposit methods you can use right now, see our instant EFT guide. Our testing methodology explains how we monitor payment method availability.

What is PayShap?

PayShap is a real-time, low-cost payment system built on South Africa’s Rapid Payments Programme. It’s managed by BankservAfrica and supported by all major banks:

  • ✅ Capitec
  • ✅ FNB
  • ✅ Absa
  • ✅ Standard Bank
  • ✅ Nedbank
  • ✅ TymeBank
  • ✅ Discovery Bank

To use PayShap, you register your phone number (called a “ShopShap ID” or proxy) through your banking app. Then anyone can send you money instantly using just that number — no account details needed. Transactions settle in under 10 seconds.

The fee is between R0 and R3 per transaction depending on your bank, and the current per-transaction limit is R3,000.

How PayShap works technically

PayShap runs on South Africa’s Rapid Payments Programme (RPP), built and managed by BankservAfrica — the same company that clears standard EFTs between SA banks. The difference: standard EFTs batch-process and can take hours. PayShap settles in real time, typically under 10 seconds.

When you send a PayShap payment, your bank debits your account instantly, sends the instruction through the RPP clearing system, and the recipient’s bank credits their account — all in one continuous process. No intermediary holds the funds.

PayShap outside gambling: where it’s already used

PayShap isn’t just a theoretical system — it’s actively used for:

  • Person-to-person transfers — splitting restaurant bills, paying back a mate, sending money to family
  • Small business payments — spaza shops, market vendors, freelance payments
  • Utility payments — some municipalities accept PayShap for rates and services
  • Online purchases — a growing number of e-commerce sites accept PayShap via payment gateways

The technology is proven and stable. The gap is casino payment processor integration, not PayShap reliability.

Can you deposit at casinos with PayShap?

Short answer: not yet at most operators, but it’s coming.

We checked the deposit methods at every major SA casino in March 2026:

Europa Casino❌ NoOffshore — unlikely to integrate

Why isn’t PayShap at casinos yet? The main reasons:

R3,000 transaction limit (fine for most players; problematic for high rollers). While fine for most deposits, higher-stakes players would find this restrictive. Ozow and direct EFT have much higher limits.

Casino payment processors haven’t integrated it yet. Ozow, SiD, and PayFast — the payment gateways casinos use — need to add PayShap as a method. Ozow has mentioned PayShap integration on their roadmap, but it hasn’t launched yet.

Merchant vs person-to-person. PayShap was designed primarily for person-to-person transfers. The merchant payment functionality is newer and still being rolled out to payment processors.

When will PayShap be available at casinos?

Based on the trajectory of payment integration in SA, we’d expect to see PayShap at major SA-licensed operators within the next 6-12 months. Ozow is the most likely first integration point, as they already handle casino EFT payments and have publicly discussed PayShap support.

We’ll update this page as operators add PayShap. Bookmark it or check back periodically.

When PayShap does arrive at casinos, it’ll slot in as a simpler alternative to Ozow — fewer redirects, phone-number-based, and supported across all banks (unlike Capitec Pay which is Capitec-only). The R3,000 limit will be the main constraint for higher-stakes players.

Best alternatives to PayShap right now

If you like PayShap’s appeal — instant, cheap, phone-number-based — here are the closest current alternatives for casino deposits:

Ozow (Instant EFT): The most similar experience. Instant transfer from your bank account, no card needed. Supports all major SA banks. Available at virtually all SA-licensed casinos. Fee: free.

Capitec Pay: If you bank with Capitec (SA’s largest bank by customer count), Capitec Pay is available at Hollywoodbets and Betway. Also instant and free.

FNB eWallet: Works at several operators. Send yourself an eWallet, then deposit using the eWallet details.

1Voucher or OTT Voucher: If you prefer cash-based deposits with no bank involvement at all, vouchers are your best option. See our 1Voucher guide and OTT Voucher guide.

Why we’re watching PayShap closely

PayShap could become the ideal casino deposit method for South African players when it arrives:

  • Instant settlement (under 10 seconds)
  • Minimal fees (R0-R3 vs free for Ozow, but PayShap doesn’t require redirecting through a third-party site)
  • Phone number only (no sharing bank account details with the casino)
  • All major banks supported (unlike Capitec Pay which is Capitec-only)

For the “R10 budget, limited data” player that represents much of the SA market, PayShap’s simplicity could be a game-changer. No app to download, no voucher to buy at a shop, no third-party redirect — just your phone number and your banking app.

We’ll be the first to test it the moment any casino goes live with PayShap deposits. In the meantime, check our reviews of Hollywoodbets and Betway to see which deposit methods work best today. And whatever method you use, gambling responsibly should always come first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I deposit at Hollywoodbets with PayShap?

Not yet. As of March 2026, no SA online casino has integrated PayShap as a deposit method. Ozow and Capitec Pay are the closest alternatives for instant bank-to-casino transfers.

What is PayShap’s transaction limit?

PayShap supports up to R3,000 per transaction. This is adequate for most recreational deposits but lower than Ozow’s R50,000+ limit, which is one reason casinos may be slow to adopt it.

Will PayShap work at offshore casinos like Springbok?

Unlikely. PayShap is a domestic SA payment rail managed by BankservAfrica. Offshore casinos would need to integrate with SA payment processors to accept it, which most haven’t done even for Ozow.

Is PayShap safer than giving my card details to a casino?

Yes. PayShap uses your phone number as a proxy — the casino would never see your bank account number or card details. Combined with bank-app authentication, it would be among the safest deposit methods available. This privacy advantage is similar to what vouchers offer today.

PayShap will get here eventually. In the meantime, Ozow does the job. Play within your means.
